Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Or, on a chevron per chevron Gray and Azure, three mullets of the first, in dexter fess a Chinese Dragon affront and in sinister fess an Oriental Dragon passant guardant Gules, in base a fleur-de-lis of the field fimbriated of the last; on a chief of the like two pallets Argent and an arrow in fess counterchanged.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Gold scroll inscribed CELERITAS ET ACCURATIO in Black letters.

Symbolism
The coats of arms originally approved for the 3d Coast Artillery and 3d Field Artillery have been combined, retaining as far as possible the original colors and symbolism.  Emphasis is on oldest and most outstanding service, with secondary emphasis on retention of the pictorial effect of the original coats of arms.  Specifically, the two white bars on the red background are from the campaign streamer for the War of 1812 and represent service by both units.  The chevron is in the colors of the campaign streamer for the Civil War in which both units saw service.  The three stars are for the numerical designation of both units.  The dragons in each case represent service in the Boxer uprising.  The arrow is for the Seminole Campaign engaged in by both units and the double fleur-de-lis is for service in both World War I and World War II.  The motto of the 3d Field Artillery is retained as being appropriate to both the design and the present mission of the new unit.  It is taken from the older coat of arms of the parent organizations and translates to Speed and Accuracy.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 30 June 1959.  It was cancelled on 23 August 1971.
